News Year Day in Kenya!!!

1 01 2009

Happy New Year!

This morning we slept our hangovers away before being woken up by the local kids, chickens, goats and cows about 5 metres away from our bedroom. Certainly an interesting way to wake up the first time in a strange land. This morning was the induction to our stay in Masai Land – which had to be the longest morning of our lives – it was scorching hot and at 3 hours long! We were very happy to soon get lunch – where we tasted our now favourite African Meal – Cha Pati – kind of like Pita Bread with cabbage, onions, potatoes etc…very nice…..at least we found something we enjoyed.  I must admit that I was a little worried about that.

Later that afternoon a group of us was dying of thirst from the hot sun and decided a walk along the dusty African road to get a Coke each (at about 20cents!) and spotted more Giraffes as they crossed the road ahead of us….this is amazing!

On the way home we stopped in the next door neighbours Manyatta (House) to introduce ourselves before attempting our first shower – which consisted of filling up a Small basin of water and splashing it over yourself! Try doing this while outside the shower door the locals are slaughtering chickens for that evenings dinner!!
That evening we got our Masai names that will be used during our stay.

Jordan now is known as Nitokoisa and Jax as Sonita!
