Our first Matatu Ride…

2 01 2009

This morning we awoke to a very tasty breakfast that also must have been VERY bad for us – rolled dough cooked in oil….nice…theres no chance of attempting a diet while in Africa!

Today we had planned on heading into Ngong town with Virginia to do some shopping and get some cash out for tomorrow’s Safari to the Masai Mara – did we tell you that yet??!! We were out waiting for a Matatu (African Taxi) at 9am and the taxi finally bumped down the road at 10:30am! What a fun wait on the side of the road!! In this time Jordan went across the road to help with the building of Virginia’s new house – by help he means watch the Kenyans do all the hard work and pick up a spade for a photo op!

The ride was fast, bumpy, packed tight and dangerous on the back of a flatbed Toyota truck – and experience I’m sure we wont get used to at all!

Finally we made it Ngong where we did a spot of shopping with Jax buying a new ‘leso’ or a kind of wrap/sarong type thing….before meeting tomorrow’s tour guide ‘Big’ John – who fits his name nicely. He took us to the nearest Barclays bank in the nearby town of Karen to get the cash out for the Safari as the ATM in Ngong was out of order and looked a bit dodgy, and as we were withdrawing 60,000 Kenyan Shillings it was best to do it on a machine that worked well!

Before heading home we grabbed some fresh fruit salad at a nearby shop before making the big trek home by foot – taking us about 1 1/2 hours to get home again!

This evenings dinner consisted of Ugali – wow the Africans love this stuff!! – before we headed to bed for the evening – tomorrow we were off to the Masai Mara for a Safari!
