Safari Day One!!!

3 01 2009

Today was a big day! Safari Day! We got picked at 7:30am sharp, even though we thought Africans were supposed to be late and always running on ‘African Time!’ The plan today was to head to the Masai Mara via a town called Narok for a spot of game spotting!

Despite being in the wrong direction – we drove to Nairobi to pick up the Cook that would come with us on the trip. There were 6 of us in total – 4 Americans and us 2 Kiwis! After topping up the fuel we were soon off…..on the worst roads we have seen for a LONG time!

We stopped off in the town of Narok – this was a typical Kenyan town, it looked very much like a shanty town with a large slum like area to the side as you drove the main street – we were to stop here for lunch for an hour – so before setting down we headed for a walk in th main street to check out the area and get some cash out in the local Barclays. Its amazing how intimidating you feel walking the street with hundreds of pairs of eyes fixed on your every move!

Soon enough we were back on the road for – but this didn’t last long as we got our first tyre puncture! This is very common on African roads and when you see the state of them you’ll soon realise why! Finally we did make it to the camp where we were to stay for the evening and shown to our ‘tents’. They looked like tents but had hard roofs and a shower and toilet in each of them. Our tent was called the ‘Leopard’!

It was time for a quick start to the Game Spotting with our first trip into the Masai Mara – which proved to be a perfect idea. In about 1 hour we had spotted tons of Buffalo, Zebra and were very lucky to spot a Leopard after finishing a meal in the tree!! He seemed very pleased with his efforts!

Before returning to camp for a hot shower and freshen up – we soon had some fantastic African food for dinner…Jax got sick….
