Shower Time!

18 01 2009

Jax was determined to get up early this morning and help with last nights dishes – but at 8 found out that Nini had been up since 6 this morning slaving away…on a Sunday!! We had our favourite African feast of Chapati, or as we call it, African Pancakes! Today we had planned to put words into action and start sorting out our school. The windows were due to go in on Thursday next week, so we headed down with a hammer and nails that we had bought in Ngong yesterday to fix some desks and window shutters for the kids. The desks are awful, very wobbly and dangerous. But with some TLC and about 30 nails, we had at least made a start in getting the desks back up to scratch.

Despite being shattered from working at the school all morning, we agreed to go with the kids for a walk to the valley to roll stones and collect the firewood for this evenings fire. Rolling Stones is exactly as it sounds…you find massive stones them roll the into the valley far below. You’d watch the rocks roll for hundreds of metres – praying they won’t hit a goat!! It was fun but hot, as we then had to collect some firewood before Jax proceeded to carry it home on her head, despite there being two men with us! Thats just the way they seem to do it!

On arrival we were dirty and smelly and proceeded to have the longest shower/bath that we’ve had so far. Bathing consists of 1 small tub, a small cubicle outside of the main housing compound, and about 1 litre of water each!! Put that all together and it’s hard to get a decent wash everyday!! But today was an exception , as we had no time constraints we spent a good hour washing, and finishing with a good foot soak!! It’s amazing when you see how dirty the water gets so fast!

This evening we certainly went to bed refreshed, clean and ready for work tomorrow.
