On Top of the Rock!

4 11 2009

Today was a jammed packed day – sadly we were being kicked out of our apartment, as there was no room for us for one more night, so had to lug our bags to the cheap Chelsea Hostel, just around the corner.
Over the last couple of days we had also been deciding on what tower to head up. All the locals suggested the newly opened `Top of the Rock`, on the top of the Rockefeller Centre on floor 74. Or option two was the Empire State building, which was slightly higher at about 100 floors up.
We ended up choosing the `Top of the Rock` for a couple of reasons, firstly the ticket then gave us a discounted ticket to tour NBC studios, and also then we could get the BEST view of the Empire State building, instead of being on top of it!

The tour of NBC was a good bit of fun, as we got to visit the newsroom of MSNBC, and the set of Saturday Night Live, which has had some amazing guests grace its stage over the years. We ended in the makeup room and a mock up set of a news broadcast. Jordan was quick to volunteer being the Newsreader behind the NBC News Desk, even reading off a teleprompter! We were hoping to get a copy of the performance, but were asked to pay an extra $30! They should have paid Jordan that!

While at NBC, lady luck must have been on our side, as we also got handed Standby tickets to a taping of `Late Night with Jimmy Fallon` later that afternoon, we soon found ourselves in line, and being offered ANOTHER upgrade. As well as being given tickets to see the show, we also were able to go on set during the musical guest and be `dancers` behind the band! The show was amazing, mainly due to the fact that the guest was Cameron Diaz, and despite not knowing the band, we also made it on camera and once again on National TV!

After the show we headed up the glass roof elevator to the top of the Rockefeller centre for an amazing evening view of the city – the lights seemed to go forever, and despite the cold outside, it was an amazing experience and an remarkable view!

The evening then finished as we jumped on the subway to head to the Meatpacking district – to get the real NYC night experience! We were sick of the touristy bars and restaurants, so got in contact with a friend we had met in Kenya earlier in the year to see the real night seen as the locals see it. We sat, drank, talked and watch the Yankees take the World Series. We should have finished drinking well before we did….
