One Small Step!

10 11 2009

It’s classed as one the world’s most popular museums – and today we were going to make a visit. The National Air and Space Museum in Washington DC is first of all huge! And it needs to be as it houses real planes and spaceships inside!

Upon walking through the doors you’re greeted firstly by a piece of Moon Rock. Despite being rubbed by a countless amount of tourists when entering the museum – it still is neat to say that you`ve touched a piece of rock bought from the moon! We were also surprised to see the Apollo 15 – the space ship that carried Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin to the moon and back – which was a tiny compartment. It seems that if you’re an astronaut, you certainly can’t be claustrophobic!

Continuing with the `Space Travel` theme, we headed to the 3D Space Imax Movie – after all we better spend SOME money while in Washington DC! Narrated by Tom Cruise, this movie gave a great perspective of life in space for the astronauts, and well worth the measly $8.95 admission fee!

The rest of the mammoth museum was packed full of planes both commercial, and fighter pilots. It also held the first ever plane to fly – invented by the Wright Brothers – this plane was complete with the original framework, only the material of the wings had been replaced!

Washington is more than museums and monuments though, a quick walk to Dupoint Circle for some people spotting and Krispy Creme doughnuts was a great way to soak in the rare bit of sun Washington provided us with! Followed by dinner in Chinatown – both delicious and so close to the hostel! With all the walking we had done today – it seems it wasn’t just Armstrong who had taken `one small step`!
