On December 4th 1956, 4 musicians by the names of Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins and Jerry Lee Lewis met and recorded at Sun Studios in Memphis and recorded a session together now famously entitled the `Million Dollar Quartet`.
Today we were following in their footsteps as we made a visit to this world famous studio and the birthplace of Rock and Roll! We began by learning about some of the history of the building and the recordings that had taken place inside – before being taken into the original Sun Studio.
The studio has stayed the same since these stars graced the floors, including the light fixtures, pictures on the walls, ceilings, floor tiles and even the microphone! It’s amazing the artists such as Elvis, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and even U2 have used this very studio to start their careers and record some of the their biggest hits – ever heard of `Great Balls of Fire`?? Yeah we thought so! It was also here that Elvis was discovered, as he came to the studio as a teenager to record a song for his Mother’s Birthday, what he didn’t know is that that recording would make him a household name.
It’s an amazing building to visit, even better when you finish off with one there legendary milk shakes on a 50`s style bar in a building with so much musical history from way back in 56 – though you could still feel the magic today!
