Our Day with Elvis!

20 11 2009

It’s the second most visited house in America after the White House in Washington DC – and today Elvis Presley’s `Graceland` was going to be `graced` by us!

This famous house was just as amazing as you’d imagine! The main living room as you enter the front door features a 15 foot white couch, the basement complete with TV room, 3 TV`s, mirrors on the ceiling, a bar and a striking yellow decor. The next door room featured a floral `curtain` like decor enclosing the pool table inside, complete with a rip on the table from Elvis himself. On heading back upstairs to the `Jungle Room`, you can’t help but notice the shag carpet on the walls and ceilings of the stairs.

The self guided tour continued outside to the grounds where Elvis would ride on his many golf carts and horses. Next up the Trophy room was epic. As you’d imagine the walls were lined with Gold and Platinum records, as well as a great collection of Elvis costumes and awards.
The ground tour ends at the meditation garden, where the graves of Elvis, his parents and his grandmother lay. The graves were covered in flowers and notes by hardcore fans. We heard that Graceland receives hundreds of letters and flowers EVERY day that they add to the Grave site and replace the flowers that had since withered.

The area around Graceland is more than just the mansion. Just across the road is the Graceland Plaza filled with overpriced cafes and souvenir shops, and the Elvis Museums that come as part of the price of the ticket. These museums included a look at Elvis`s time in Germany with the Army and also the movies that he featured in.

A favourite exhibition couldn’t be missed as you walked around the plaza – Elvis`s 2 planes! Inside they were just amazing, with 24 Carat Gold Basins in the bathrooms, conference tables, and a double bed complete with gold seat belts! The plane was used for both work and pleasure, including a trip to Colorado with Lisa-Marie. Elvis discovered that Lisa Marie hadn’t experienced snow – so jumped on the plane, flew to Colorado to play in the snow for half an hour, before flying back to Memphis!

Being a big car fan, the Elvis Car Museum was an impressive look at the cars that he once owned and drove. From the Bentleys, to the Ferraris, even motorcycles and golf carts! The world famous Pink Cadillac also was on display! It still boggles the mind how one man could have owned so much!

The sun was going down for the day over the Graceland mansion, but we stuck around. Anyone that knows us also knows that we enjoy Christmas Lights and the Holidays. Tonight was the lighting ceremony for the Graceland Mansion, using the same lights that Elvis used when he was alive! Sure it wasn’t the most impressive lights display we`ve seen – but was still a great way to kick off the holiday season, and finish a great day with the King.
