Po-Boys in the Big Easy!

24 11 2009

We had finally made it to the Big Easy! New Orleans! It’s been a destination that we have always wanted to visit, and it was very exciting to roll into the Bus Station – despite it being very early in the morning!

Today we decided to get our bearings in the city and especially around the French Quarter. This area of the city was amazing, with fascinating architecture, that gave us the feeling we were back in Europe, with the smalls streets, cobblestone footpaths and multi level houses complete with balconies draped with ivy and shrubs.

Our first point of call was to check out the French Market Place, and on arrival found Cafe De Monde, a 24 hour cafe, bursting at the seams. It’s always a good sign when you see so many people at one eatery, so we took a seat to see what the fuss was about. We were served with a morning coffee, and 6 French Doughnuts called ‘Beignets’. Covered in icing sugar and obviously fried, these weren’t the most healthy of treats – but so delicious!

The markets continued into the Farmers Market and Flea Market, where we were able to get some tacky souvenirs at a steal of a price, and also some ‘Praline’ chocolate, which again was delicious. We could easily see the future of our time in New Orleans and most of it seemed to revolve around eating!

It was easy to spend the day exploring the shops, restaurants and sights of the French Quarter. We finished by trying the local Po-Boy Sandwich, one with Fried Oysters and the other with Fried Cat Fish! Both tasty and very cheap for a filling meal! All this walking took its toll today, we planned on jumping on a boat tomorrow….
