Our Day at the Movies!

22 12 2009

It was Day 3 of our theme park tour – and we were already knackered! It was a struggle to get up – made easier by the fact that we were off to another theme park for the day! Today we were off to explore Universal Studios Florida!

As you can imagine this was an amazing place, full of great rides and shows!  It’s amazing what you can experience in a day, from standing in a Tornado in the ‘Twister’ attraction – having buildings fall around you, to chasing Jaws around Amity Bay!  Favourite rides of ours included the ‘Mummy’ rollercoaster – which is a frightening indoor rollercoaster (and MUCH better than the Hollywood version!), Men in Black – which saw you blasting aliens in this interactive ride.  The new Simpsons ride was also amazing!  You boarded a cart at Krusty the clowns theme park and were blasted around in this amazing motion master ride. At points is was so real that you could smell ‘baby smells’ whenever you ran into Maggie!

Particular mention also has to be made about the new Rollercoaster at the park called the ‘Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit’.  Firstly with this ride you can choose your own soundtrack which is blasted in your ears as you ride, and secondly, you get pulled up a VERTICAL track to begin your first major descent! It was an amazing experience which is recorded for you on video – sadly our video didn’t work, and we didn’t like the thought of lining up for 45 minutes to try again!

Soon it was our turn to BE in the movies – as we headed over to the ‘Disaster’ attraction.  This attraction is a mix of a behind the scenes tour and ride, as they get a few volunteers up on stage to act out scenes, before the whole audience boarded a subway tram and witnessed a disaster in a subway station, with our reactions caught on camera!   Jordan happened to be picked as a volunteer, and played the part of a Gas attendant. His character was in a building as it collapsed and was surprised after the director calling ‘action’ to find fake blocks fall on his head!  As you can imagine they played the final movie trailer to the whole crowd – which was a great laugh!  Especially when Jordan’s helmet was knocked off his head from the falling blocks!

We were pretty tired after a full on day in the park – and finished at the Universal City walk complex eating at the NBA restaurant – after all tomorrow we were going next door to visit Universals ‘sister’ park ‘Islands of Adventure’ for another day of thrills!

Seaworld with Shamu!

6 12 2009

We kept the water theme going today as we headed off to Seaworld to meet Shamu!  We had both only been to the Seaworld on the Gold Coast of Australia, so we’re really looking forward to the Florida version!

Our aim was to see as many shows as possible – and ride the high action thrill rides as many times possible!  The shows at the park were amazing – from the Dolphin Encounter show which mixed acrobats, stunts with dolphins and whales! For a laugh we visited the Otter and Sealion Christmas show – it was a great comedy show that showed of the talented animals as they got ready for Christmas!

The favourites would have to be the ‘Shamu’ killer whale shows – you really can’t miss them.  As Christmas was just around the corner, we were treated to the main ‘Shamu – Believe’ show, as well as the night time version ‘Shamu – Christmas Miracles!’.  Both shows were equally amazing, showing the power of the huge animals – and the bond with the trainers!

The giant screens at the back of the stage provided great underwater shots of the trainers being taken from the surface to the bottom of the tank – before being projected out of the water at great speeds!  And nothing can beat the part of the show, where Shamu is sent around the edge of the tank, whipping his tail in the water and soaking the first 15 rows of the audience!  Luckily were left all 3 shows that we went to dry!

As well as the shows, Seaworld also has a couple of great thrill rides!  From the floorless roller coast ‘Kraken’ to ‘Manta’ where you ride lying FACE DOWN swooping over the park like a Manta Sting Ray!  A great thrill, and also a great way to get the blood pumping to experience the rest of the park!

The rest of the day was spent checking out the fantastic animals displays, like the Shark Encounter, Polar Express Polar Bears and HUGE Walrus`s and of course the Sting Rays!  Before long though the sun had gone and we finshed the evening by taking in one more show, which funnily enough was an ice skating Christmas show (and no the animals didn’t go ice skating sadly!) followed by a great fireworks display over the lagoon!  A great way to finish an action packed day – by this stage though we needed a break from fish, so planned to hit the movies tomorrow…..

Our Date with Dolphins!

5 12 2009

Our first morning in Orlando – and we were to go check out ‘Discovery Cove’ Park. The news broadcast the evening before wasn’t painting the best picture for the weather – but unlike any other theme park, with Discovery Cove we had booked our reservation in advance for this particular day (the only allow 1000 guests per day). This meant that is was pure luck to the weather that you’d get – especially in winter!
When we awoke it wasn’t all that bad – sure it wasn’t boiling hot, and sure there was a bit of rain – but we were planning on doing a lot of swimming today anyway!

The theme park was beautiful – on entering it felt as though you were on a resort island. Sandy beaches, clear water and marine life! We started the day by filling up on Breakfast. Everything is included with the admission price at Discovery Cove, form all meals, towels, snorkels to free beer!

Soon after Breakfast we jumped in the water and floated down the Lazy River –slowly circling the park in the heated water. This gave us the perfect time to practice our snorkel techniques for the main Coral Reef pool! Soon enough we were keen to meet some of the animals – and after seeing a trainer feeding a pool FULL of Sting Rays and not one other guest in sight – we jumped in to help! What an experience – being able to hand feed a Sting Ray. We held 3 sardines in each hand, and waited for the ray to approach. As their mouths are on the bottom of their body – they swim over your hand, and you feel suction like a vacuum as they suck up the food! No teeth involved thankfully!

Soon it was the time we had come to Discovery Cove for – to swim with Dolphins! After a quick orientation, we were in the cold pool with the Dolphin trainers and of course the dolphins! They swam up to you, letting you stroke there bodies, the turned over so you could rub their bellies, and we were even taught hand signals to make the dolphins ‘talk’! What an experience! After a picture perfect kiss with the dolphins, we swam to the middle of the lagoon. Suddenly the dolphins emerged from under us, as we grabbed two of the dolphin’s fins and were towed back to shore! Talk about power! Of course no dolphin experience would be complete without some tricks with the dolphins – and to finish, we were taught the signals to send the dolphins spinning in the air!

After a delicious free lunch and a warm up in the hot ‘Lazy River’ – we entered into the Coral Reef pool. A swimming experience like no other. The lagoon was huge and inside was thousands of exotic and tropical fish! The colours were amazing, which hopefully we`ll caught on our underwater camera that we bought! There were underwater viewing windows that got you uncomfortably close to a pool FULL of sharks and also Barracudas – lucky the glass was there to protect us! It still gave you a great thrill though! A highlight for the both of us was swimming with the Sting Rays! They were EVERYWHERE. Our favourite was a spotted Ray which had a pattern similar to a cheetah – and had a wing span of 6 feet! It’s amazing sharing the water with these creatures as they gracefully glide right underneath you!

Discovery Cove is also home to an amazing aviary – full of exotic birds. The great thing about this experience was that you were able to enter the aviary and hand feed the birds. It’s amazing how many birds you could attract while standing under the gas heaters with a small pot of food in your hands! Soon enough you were surrounded!

The rest of the day was spent jumping between lagoons, rivers and aviary’s – before warming up in the bar with a beer, watching the Dolphins in the distance as they jumped high out of the water. We wouldn’t call Discovery Cove a theme park – but a luxury adventure resort!

NEW VIDEO – Osborne Family Lights at Disneyworld!

If this doesn’t get you in the Christmas Spirit - then we don’t know what will!  This is the video that we took from Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Florida last week!

Livin’ the Life in Miami!

3 12 2009

Miami is known for its fine dining and night clubs that scatter the area attracting celebrities form all over the world. Sadly we couldn’t afford the cover charge or the elaborate menus of some of these places – but did intend to sample a bit of the Miami night and dining life!

We had read about the ‘News Cafe’ on the corner of Ocean Drive and 8th Avenue in magazines in guidebooks. It was described as the cafe of choice for many celebrities including Paris Hilton etc…On our first morning in Miami we decided to try the breakfast at the ‘News Cafe’, Jordan going for the standard pancakes and Jax the large bowl of Yoghurt and Fruit. We quickly discovered why it was so popular and made it our breakfast of choice for the rest of our time here! It was delicious!

As well as Ocean Drive, Lincoln Road Mall is a popular outdoor mall, that is packed full of high fashion clothing stores and restaurants. We decided to check out one of the restaurants down the mall – using our preferred option of looking for the restaurant with the most tables full, indicating a popular meal! If we liked the look of the menu as well we sat down! Today was no exception, we found a restaurant (the names slips our mind now) which had a mammoth selection. It took us straight back to our Cheesecake Factory days in Chicago! Luckily it was just as delicious!

A night out in Miami also isn’t complete without a stop in one of the bars for a cocktail and the stars. We choose the Clevelander. It seemed to tick all the boxes. On Ocean Drive, Full, Cheap, Outside and even had a pool! It’s a great way to end a night in Miami, sipping on a Miami Margarita while listening to the longest Michael Jackson remix ever created by a DJ!

We couldn’t stay long though. We’re off tomorrow – catching a bus to Orlando. We have a date with some dolphins…..

Sunning in Miami!

2 12 2009

Miami Beach! It’s where the rich and famous come to relax on the beach and party the night away – and we had finally arrived to join them!  The only difference being, at this stage of our trip we’re certainly not rich, and of course not famous!

We arrived yesterday, after another mammoth trip from the Greyhound Bus station (opposite Miami airport) to our hotel using public transport!  It took us over an hour, one transfer and a lot of sweat in the Miami heat, but it saved us a fortune! We arrived at our hotel, trying to get an early check in but being told to wait 3 hours or pay $25!  We took the 3 hour option and lay on the beach!

Our plan in Miami was to walk the famous streets of South Beach, including Ocean Drive and Lincoln Road, and of course spend some much needed time on the beach itself!

The buildings were just like you see in the postcards and magazines, very art deco and more spectacular at night when all lit up.  Who would have thought that also walking Ocean Drive we would run into a wild lizard?  This creature was seriously about 1 metre in length and wandering the Lumis Park near the beach! The lizard had striking colours, and seemed more afraid of us than what we were of him.  Of course you can only have this one of a kind experience when you don’t have your camera on you, meaning that we can prove our find!

The beaches were amazing.  Extremely long with white, ‘fluffy like’ sand.  And unlike Daytona, the sand was much more comfortable.  This has its drawbacks though, as it makes it ten times easier to fall asleep under the hot Miami sun – sadly we DO have the proof of this!  Now not only were we not rich and famous, but we were also bright red!

Cops in Daytona!

30 11 2009

We’ve always known that America can be a dangerous country – with countless stories of crime and shootings surfacing constantly. We just never thought we would get so close to the action.

Looking back it wasn’t the wisest decision to book a Greyhound bus trip leaving Daytona Beach at 11:50pm – especially when the station would be closed, forcing us to wait behind the Greyhound station. We arrived to find police cars circling a black van, and outside our bus stop, a local black man with a head scarf covering the majority of this face. As scary as he first look – he turned out to be our godsend. After spotting the police we decided not to stay in one spot making us venerable, and thought a walk around the block would help, but were soon stopped by the local man. He told us that the black van was owned by a sex offender, who was on the run. The offender had taken shot at the cop, and made a run for it. This made the area extremely unsafe with a crazed lunatic on the loose, armed.

The longer we were there, the more interesting characters arrived – and seemed to want to chat to the only white kids in town! We heard there views o n the government, the police and the area of Daytona. We didn’t have the chance to talk – we just stood there nodding, with our minds still focused on the fugitive on the loose.

To make matters worse, the bus was late – forcing us to stay outside for longer. An FBI agent soon arrived, to make sure the offender didn’t jump on our bus. Jordan quickly made friends with the agent, in the hopes that he would stay in the area for longer. This was a good plan – until the agent asked Jordan if he could hide behind him and his pack, as a car approached! Luckily it was a false alarm, and soon enough the roar of a bus engine emerged around the corner. We’ve never felt so happy to see a Greyhound Bus before!

Finally we were able to get some rest on our way to Miami!
